Jonesing For Junk Food

Michael Moss is an investigative reporter. He won a Pulitzer Prize in 2010 for his reporting on the meat industry. Here he takes on the snack industry:

"...What happened next was not written down. But according to three participants, when Mudd stopped talking, the one C.E.O. whose recent exploits in the grocery store had awed the rest of the industry stood up to speak. His name was Stephen Sanger, and he was also the person — as head of General Mills — who had the most to lose when it came to dealing with obesity. Under his leadership, General Mills had overtaken not just the cereal aisle but other sections of the grocery store. The company’s Yoplait brand had transformed traditional unsweetened breakfast yogurt into a veritable dessert. It now had twice as much sugar per serving as General Mills’ marshmallow cereal Lucky Charms. And yet, because of yogurt’s well-tended image as a wholesome snack, sales of Yoplait were soaring, with annual revenue topping $500 million. Emboldened by the success, the company’s development wing pushed even harder, inventing a Yoplait variation that came in a squeezable tube — perfect for kids. They called it Go-Gurt and rolled it out nationally in the weeks before the C.E.O. meeting. (By year’s end, it would hit $100 million in sales.)..."

Hitler: The Vile Vegetarian

Margot Woelk, the last survivor of fifteen young woman who were forced by the SS to be tasters of Hitler's food while he was at the Wolf's Lair, (800 days spread out from 1941 to 1944) has finally broken her silence. "Of course I was afraid. If it had been poisoned I would not be here today. We were forced to eat it. We had no choice." The fifteen women had to eat the food over an hour period to make sure that there was no slow acting poison. Her testimony has cleared up a historical question: All the food they tasted was vegetarian. "It was all vegetarian, the most delicious fresh things, from asparagus to peppers and peas, served with rice, and salads...it was quite delicious - the best vegetables and fresh fruit. There was no meat and I don't remember any fish." The overwhelming majority of Germans at the time had no access to fresh vegetables or fruit. When the Wolf's Lair was about to fall to the Russians she escaped back to Berlin where she hid out from the SS. They didn't capture her but the Russians did. "I was brought to a flat and kept there for 14 days where they raped me. I was never able to have children." In 1946 her life took a turn for the better when her husband who had been missing since 1939 showed up; he had been imprisoned by the Russians and was so thin she didn't recognize him.

Hitler was a vegetarian politically. He was convinced that vegetarianism would promote Aryan purity. In 1942 he told Joseph Goebbels that converting Germany to vegetarianism would be a priority once the war was over. A Hitler Youth manual of the 1930s championed soy beans which it called "Nazi beans" as an alternative to meat. Earlier, Hitler did occasionally backslide, eating ham, Bavarian sausages and liver dumplings. According to a German soldier's secret diary "Hitler eats rapidly, mechanically. He abstractedly bites his fingernails, he runs his index finger back and forth under his nose, and his table manners are little short of shocking."

Waffle Way
Here's a fun Brusselicious event: On November 24th there is going to be a competition between 10 of the 19 Brussels boroughs to make the best Brussels Waffles. The waffles one gets the most often in the streets (even in Brussels) are Liège Waffles. The waffles Americans know as Belgian Waffles are actually Brussels Waffles though the ones one gets in the US tend to be very light and dry.
So they are going to turn the Royal Saint Hubert Galleries into Waffle Way on Saturday the 24th and from 2pm to 5pm everyone is invited to come taste the waffles for free.
And to advertize the day they came up with this wonderful poster in the style of Marc Sleen.

It's maatjes season once again and somehow I missed the day long festival three weeks ago. I could swear that that billboard didn't go up until June 25th...
