Looking For Eggs
photo: Richard Harris

Thirteen years ago the EU passed legislation requiring one third larger cages for egg-laying hens. The law took effect this year but many egg producers still hadn't brought their facilities up to date so Europe is experiencing a major egg shortage; 2 million eggs per day in Belgium alone! This is affecting the food industry more than the individual consumers. Various sectors of the food industry are blaming each other but as far as the EU is concerned this will sort itself out in 3 to 4 months and "the well-being of the egg-laying hens will be considreably improved."
